This course is designed to train students to safely and effectively operate and maintain wastewater treatment plants. This course is designed to train students in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plants, emphasizing the use of safe practices and procedures.

About ProTrain:

ProTrain is committed to offering world class interactive online courses that provide training and learning support for the student in a number of ways during their experience. The ProTrain course structure has been developed to provide activities to guide students throughout the entire process of learning. Learning activities include hands-on assignments that allow students to use what they are learning to allow better transferable skills within their work environments; and collaborative assignments, like wikis and discussion groups that allow them to share what they have learned with others in the same course.

While a student learns, they are not alone. Each student will receive guidance and support from his or her assigned Training Assessment Manager (TAM) and Student Services Specialist (SSS) representative. In addition, we will offer live monthly webinars and feedback sessions for various subject categories. Throughout the entire course, students are monitored by the SSS representative using progress reporting from the ProTrain Registration System (PRS).

ProTrain will provide Students who successfully complete their online certification programs and pass their industry level certification exams the access to the new ProTrain Education-2-Employment Career Tracker system. The Career Tracker will allow our students who pass exams to load their own resumes at no additional cost, and letting industry employers find their talent through the same database.

Curriculum Developer Biography:

Sigrid Ferguson Green, MSEd in Instructional Design for Online Learning, MS Human Resource Management, with over 15 years of experience in training and development/education. Her experience has been to lead teams of Instructional Designers, and managed curricula for companies such as: American Express and Assurant. Her experience includes but is not limited to the following: technical writing, web design, training, instructional design, graphic design, and curriculum development.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: General Wastewater Collection and Treatment Design Consideration

In this lesson you will learn that a fundamental prerequisite to begin the design of wastewater facilities is a determination of the design capacity. This, in turn, is a function of the wastewater flow rates.

Lesson 2: Headworks and Preliminary Treatment.

In this lesson you will learn that the flow measurement is an essential component of the operation and management of the WWTP.

Lesson 3: Primary Treatment

In this lesson you will learn the primary treatment is the first process in the wastewater treatment plant to remove a significant fraction of organic particulate matter (suspended solids).

Lesson 4: Wastewater Microbiology

In this lesson you will be provided with an introduction to wastewater microbiology. Emphasis is placed on microbial biochemistry because it forms the basis for selecting the appropriate unit process for treating the wastewater as well as establishing the fundamental relationships for design calculations.

Lesson 5: Secondary Treatment by Suspended Growth Biological Processes

In this lesson you will focus on processes utilizing suspensions of microorganisms (suspended growth) to treat wastewater. 

Lesson 6: Secondary Treatment by Attached Growth and Hybrid Biological Processes

This lesson focuses on the processes that utilize films of microorganisms attached to inert media (attached growth) to treat wastewater.

Lesson 7: Secondary Settling, Disinfection, and Postareation

In this lesson you will be introduced to chlorine and ultraviolet disinfection.

Lesson 8: Tertiary Treatment

In this lesson you will focus on tertiary treatment processes: chemical precipitation, granular filtration, membrane filtration, and carbon adsorption.

Lesson 9: Wastewater Plant Residuals Management

In this lesson you will become familiar with the basic processes for sludge treatment.
